Painting Baseboards like a PRO! The Missing DIY Tip Revealed
I work for a company that sells BM products and this video really helped me understand them. Thank you!
Love the Channel name lol.
😁
What's the missing tip?
Make sure you paint baseboards whilst listening to upbeat techno music
A painter told me to put vaseline on the face and beard.
To get a better seal on the mask? I suppose that would work but I’ve never tried it. I just crank the straps tight.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Thanks.
what prime rwould you recommend for either of those? painting kitchen cabinets and cant decide.
A lot of guys like using BIN shellac on cabinets. It’s fairly aggressive to work with, but it’s pretty much bomb proof as a base coat. The other option is to use something like fresh start from Benjamin Moore which is 100% acrylic. It’s easier to work with, but you gotta make sure it gets a good bond to the cabinet surface.
No, no, no, Jeremy. You got this all wrong. I'm expecting YOU to decide for me so I can blame YOU for your lack of taste and horrible choice you've made to paint MY house. /s
That seams to be the general strategy. It wouldn’t be an issue if people just let me tell them what they should like 😏
How do I paint over semi gloss paint on the ceiling?
You can just go straight over it with a flat ceiling paint. You may want to sand it a bit with a 360 sanding disk before you start coating it with your ceiling paint. Plan on doing 2 coats
Did you mix the stain with the polly on the second and third coat as well?
There was still a bit mixed for those coats. A little stain goes a long way.
@@SuperVassarBrothers thank you so much
I try 8 paint samples of white off white BM and SW no one have the right color « samplize » is the best method see the reality!
I am a fan and you’re not left with a bunch of sample paint that you can’t use.
Bought paint from Sherwin Williams recently to repaint the house. Definitely had to go through all 3 tiers to get my wife to find the one she liked best. But hey, cheaper to get a quart or two of sample paint than repainting.
For sure. It’s worth it to get it right before doing all the hard work 🫡
Would you recommend color matching at Home Depot?
They can do a decent job depending on who’s working the counter.
COME TO SW AT SEEKONK MA!!! Not sure where you guys live but ill let you guys record, around and the backroom, for any video ideas you guys have. Just have to convince my manager since im still a new employee 😭
Hahaha, no worries homie. We’re right outside of Philly so MA would be a bit of a hike for us. I appreciate the kind offer good sir 🤙
Thats crazy man, i swear yesterday a lady ordered 15 quart samples, paid nearly $200, i can see why people have a hard time deciding what color to get, its hard to visualize it. I will give this 3tier advice to future buyers 👍
Yeah man, picking colors is a big friction point for a lot of folks. Thanks for watching!!
Its very very splattery as well.
Oh!!! What was the name of the TEAL color and what company makes it that you painted the wall right after you painted the purple in the wall. It is beautiful! I’m trying to pick a color for my living room. Would love to know this info. Thanks!
So that Teal was a color grade done in the editing process. You might like Lagoon from Sherwin Williams. That’s a great color that’s similar to what you saw on screen.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Thanks for replying so fast! I appreciate it! I will check out Lagoon!
Good tips Sir 👍
I’m glad you found them useful! Thanks for watching!
Why not tape the top to so u don’t have to touch up the wall or is the wall getting painted to
The wall is getting painted as well. When we do full repaints we do the ceiling and the trim first, then do the walls last.
I call baloney on the paper towels; you guys just wipe your fingers off on your pants and T-shirts, not paper towel! 😆
Whoa whoa whoa…only when we run out of paper towels…or forget that we have paper towels.

Hey man just started working at sherwin Williams at 20yrs old with little knowledge of paint, and your videos have been very helpful, i appreciate the dedication in making these videos broda💪 just subscribed!!
Nice dude! I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful and good luck at SW!! 🤙
Can you use this on concrete before laying down LVP flooring. Dealing with 8 years of urine smell have cleaned with TSP and Natures Miracle.
Yes you can apply BIN to concrete. A lot of remediation companies use it for the application you’re talking about. You can even do a second coat if you think the odor is coming through after the first coat.
Am I crazy for considering using high gloss for my entire interior walls on a new constructed house? Reason being I would like the most durable and easy to clean when things get dirty and Dusty. In my current house, I used semi gloss on the walls and I have no regrets.
Well it’s a personal preference so whatever melts your butter. There are some alternative products that offer a lot of durability while giving you more flexibility with sheens. ScuffX from Benjamin Moore is a good example.
made in China🤣
😃
@@SuperVassarBrothers It seems to be bristles produced by our company
whats your thoughts on the difference between pro clasic and duration trim paint?
Pro classic is probably my least favorite trim paint that I’ve ever used. It’s annoying to work with and I don’t like how it looks when it cures out. My current go-to trim paint is Emerald Urethane trim enamel from Sherwin Williams. Duration is good for an acrylic but if you want a bit more durability and adhesion then you can check out Emerald urethane
Unrelated to this specific video but we just had our interior trim painted. This included our fireplace. They used a flat white. It now feels chalky and does not match the rest of the trim. My question is - can we go over it once or so with more of a semi glass?
Yes you can go over it with semi-gloss. Your trim paint should adhere to that with no issues but you’ll likely have to do 2 coats to get a uniform looking finish.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Thank you 🙏
I started painting professionally in 1972 and have found that almost all the gadgets they sell to save you time or improve the quality of your work are a waste of money and don't do what they promise. Every painter has bought some tool that seemed like a good idea but after one or two uses was put in a box somewhere and forgotten.
And yet they keep the gadgets and gizmos coming. I’m with you!
I love your videos....This IS the best way to paint a 6 panel door. I have a question? I have to prime my doors before painting because they are enamel painted...I'd like to paint them with latex. Is this a good idea? Do I need to sand them? Advice?
So there are a lot of options for trim paint. If you’re going with a 100% acrylic then I’d recommend giving the doors a scuff sand with 150 grit sandpaper. Do a little section with your trim paint and see if it’s forming a good bond. If the paint is not sticking then you may need to prime with something like fresh start from Benjamin Moore. You could also use a hybrid paint like emerald urethane from Sherwin Williams. That adheres to almost everything.
What is best for duration paint SW?
Corona Cortez or Monterey
@@SuperVassarBrothers thanks guys!
If speed is what youre after you would spray. 14 means unnecessary costs in additional trays, cages and sleeves.
There are lots of scenarios where spraying is not appropriate. 14s make a huge difference when rolling big walls and ceilings. It’s cost effective for my crew, but if it’s not for you then that’s cool too.
@@SuperVassarBrothers then you switch to a 9 when the 14 is too big.. Becomes inefficient. Two sets of trays and sleeves. Have you timed yourself? Or you just assume you're so much faster? How 'bout you show us on an actual job.
Only flat paint ain't flat anymore, it has a sheen to it now
It depends on the brand and the product. But yes, many flat paints (particularly wall paints) have a bit of sheen in them.
Which tip is best for exterior windows and vinyl for duration paint
Well definitely don’t use duration interior for exterior work. I don’t use duration exterior so I’m not sure what tip would work. It’ll say on the can.
Cutting brush doesn't work for beginners either, it takes practice. The pads work great. Reading instructions help. You use them in conjunction with a brush that the edger wont do. Pad edger has been in use since the 60's. Big seller because they work.
If it works for you then have at it.
Hi First im a beginner, `And to my question is Do you recommend or to be more specific is it ok to use airless gun to paint this product ? Tnx
I'm not sure which product you are referring to, but all of them can be used in an airless sprayer.
Thanks for posting this video, found it really interesting & I wasn't at all surprised to hear your negative thoughts on these contraptions! I would not waste my money on this crap & would rather spend my money on employing a pro painter like yourself. ☘️👍
Hahaha, that's a solid move. Perhaps the biggest time saver of all is hiring a quality professional :)
They aren't made for corners . Neither product. And then with the roller try dragging it down where there's no paint. Not go back and forth through the paint like a dummy
I’ll stick with my brush and skills
Good morning I hope that you are able to advise me I am a wheelchair user and I have made marks on the bathroom door and need to paint repair it before moving out the door has a grain not sure what type of paint to use
Usually doors are painted with a semi-gloss trim paint. Those are quite common. You may want to go with an acrylic because they're easy to work with. Duration Semi-gloss or Emerald Semi-gloss are good options from Sherwin Williams. If the door is white, then you can just use a the stock white from whatever paint manufacturer you go with. As far as the marks go, you can try scrubbing them with soap and water to see if you can get them off or part of the way off. Then I'd suggest painting the whole door. That's my take on it without seeing it in person. Good luck with your project!
@@SuperVassarBrothers thank you for replying much appreciated 🙏🌻💕
So basically you’d normally use a matte sheen for all rooms including bathrooms. Interesting as I’m considering repainting our entire new construction home, which was painted in a flat builder grade paint
Here's a breakdown of sheens that may be useful for you're upcoming project: ua-cam.com/video/DyKh80Yt9k0/v-deo.html Folks generally prefer either matte or eggshell on the walls. Good luck with your project!
@@SuperVassarBrothersthanks for the response! I’d hire a professional but I thought it might just be easier to take my time and paint one room at a time
I generally like SW paints... used Cashmere (white) eggshell for a tongue-n-grove ceiling in a family room and attached kitchen that came out very well.. more of a satin'ish look. It seems to be smooth enough to allow the occasional wet wipe down that a kitchen needs... yes, the ceiling. ;) My go-to paints for walls is the Emerald line (usually satin) and their specific door & trim paint ( "HGTV" branded semi-gloss) for millwork and doors that is not shown in your lineup. Seems very durable and remains ever so slightly flexible to take knocks and dings. You can usually get them on sale a few times year... 20-40% off.
Those are all solid options 🤙
Could it be used with a paint sprayer
Yes it can
A tip for the ocd: It's hard for me to tell how flat & blended in to the wall my sanded 8 inch patches are so after the spackle has dried I put a straight metal 1-foot ruler over it from all angles to see if it's a hill or there are valleys. I'm putting on gloss paint so that stuff will probably show a little more.
That’s a great way to do it for sure 🤙
I need the relaxing music. Thank you. Your vids are great too, they get to the point without needing to be told how cool we all are, and intelligently put. - Couple things: Would be nice to know the proper consistency to revive recently old dryer spackle. I'm trying it now...not too wet, not too dry I guess...so far it's not all staying down. Some spackle is coming off the wall as I lay it down & leaving divets. (must be too wet?) - Another thing is it looks like you lay your knife low to the wall as you slide it along? I'm doing that.
I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful! There are a lot of ways to spackle. There are a couple things that can help. Keep your blades cleans. Often spackle will dry on the edges and it’ll cause your blades to leave grooves in your patches. You can dip your blades in water and wipe them off and that’ll do it. As far as the spackle coming off the walls, I’d have to see how you’re doing it. It’s kinda similar to icing a cake. If you lay it on too thick then gravity will do its thing and it’ll fall off. Also a flexible mudding knife makes a big difference. I’m not a fan of the really stiff ones. I hope this was helpful and happy mudding!
@@SuperVassarBrothers Helps a lot. Thank you. I'll be laying some spackle down tonight. I have a 4 inch wide stiff blade for now, but have used a flexible blade in the past and I think i liked it.
Thanks for the great tips. Question... if Azek was never painted when originally installed the corners, caulk joints, etc. are now very dirty and don't clean up easy. Do you have to remove the old caulk or can you just paint right over it? Thanks.
As long as the caulk isn’t cracked out then you can just paint over it. If the caulking is cracking out and there’s gaps, then I’d recommend re-caulking those areas then running your top coats of paint.
How has the paint held up on the columns?
Moorglo Soft-gloss holds up well 🤙
1. Don’t use it on inside corners. That makes no sense at all. You’ll just end up with paint on the wheels and ruin them before you even get started. It’s for ceiling, trim cutting and feature walls only. (dry paint on wheel side). 2. The harder you press the closer the line. 3. Dip and scrape off excess paint on the edge of your pan. 4. Less is more. Don’t overload the pad. You still have to do 2 coats. Light pressure on the first cut. Heavier pressure on the second pass.
Or…1. Develop skills with a brush. Whichever you prefer
@@SuperVassarBrothers time is money and the edger gets you to the next job faster. When used properly it’s 3x faster than hand cutting.
Hahahahahah es muy bueno. I hope mi amigo. I am about to try that paint.
I wish you well good sir. It’s a great trim paint for being 100% acrylic. If you need something a bit more durable you can check emerald urethane trim enamel. 🫡
Wow this is such a godsend I've been looking at paint vids for like an hour now and this one is just quick no bs and on pointttt 🫰
I’m glad you found it useful!! 😁
I've used all of them before. I had a pro painter look at one of the staircases and wondered how he could paint that high up. I used a pole and a Behr paint edger up to the ceiling and touched up the corners with a brush on a pole. The Accu Brush has huge drawbacks it can only go one direction because of the guard which to me was the worst and most cumbersome. The regular edgers work in combination with the brush to give a fast quality look as does the roller then the brush cutting.
If it’s working for you then keep on keeping on 🫡
hello can you advice for paint in interior doors . i can paint on walls is L146 matt . thanks
Most folks prefer semi-gloss on doors
Good info!
I’m glad you found it useful!
@@SuperVassarBrothers Yes, in fact I bought it today to soon paint my kitchen cabinets.

They do indeed, I’ve just never liked them
